The word 'Lawn' originates from old middle French and English words launde and laund, meaning 'wooded distric' or heath, or an open area within the woods.

The concept of actually mowing lawns began around the 16th century, when it was mostly European aristocrats who had them. As the practice grew, it inspired wealthy landowners to maintain similar open patches of grass on their properties and estates.

Although lawn mowers were invented around 1830, before then lawns were still managed and maintained. One of the best ways to do that was by putting livestock on the lawn to keep it short and trim, much like how you see livestock keeping paddocks trim these days.

Wealthier families and households however, would have people come to their properties and trim their lawns by hand with tools like a scythe. Much like Pascoe Vale Lawn and Garden do the same things now, we go to peoples homes to mow the lawn, although technology and machinery has advanced just a touch.

In the 19th Century, a British man named Edwin Budding changed the direction of gardening by inventing the first lawnmower in the year of 1830. It quickly replaced the cumbersome and time consuming gardening tool the 'scythe'.

Originally Budding invented the lawn mower to cut grass in large gardens and sporting grounds. However, he was soon inspired to take that technology and apply it to the lay persons residential yard.

Consequently, he patented the invention and on the patent he wrote 'Gentlemen will find using my machine an amusing, helpful exercise'. Budding was right, at Pascoe Vale Lawn and Garden, we certainly enjoy mowing lawns and smiles it brings to our clients.

Despite he's original lawn mower being designed to mow larger spaces of lawn, it still looked pretty similar to the push the push mowers of today. In 1870, a man from Indiana USA, named Elwood McGuire, built upon Buddings concept and improved on the design. McGuire made a lawn mower that was liter so it was easier to push, consequently, the device rose in popularity.

They were fairly inexpensive which made them very accessible to the general public, so tons of British and American households purchased them. The petrol powered lawn mowers were invented in 1902, although it did take a few decades before they became popular here in the U S mowing.

Mowing the lawn really became the norm after world war, when an influx of soldiers returned from War. As a result, the suburbs grew with lots of residents and more people had lawns to take care of. People couldn't believe the was work mowing peoples grass and were enthusiastic to sign up.

It's estimated between 1946 and 1958, about 140,000 lawnmowers were sold and that number jumped to 4.2 million. That wasn't just a coincidence by the way, community started encouraging people to care for their lawns.

In the 1940s, one development owner in Levittown, long island sent a newsletter to the homeowners in his neighbourhood. It read. No feature of a suburban residential community contributes as much to the charm and beauty of the individual home and locality as well kept lawns. So what originally began as an elite activity has evolved into something that now adds to the beauty and charm of our homes.
