Weeds are a fact of life and sooner or later, we must face the music and deal with them accordingly. Pascoe Vale Lawn and Garden have a few simple ways to not only manage those weeds but slow their growth without using any chemicals at all.
First things first the best way that we can prevent weeds from taking over our property is to minimise how many germinate from all the seeds that are already sitting in our soil. Seeds also germinate from things that we can't control for example, the wind can blow seeds into your property and garden, particularly when we experience the strong northerly winds. Not only that, believe it or not, as we walk through the neighbourhood and across other natural environments, seeds can stick to our clothing and be picked up by our shoes.
Probably the biggest organic mechanism of seed spread are birds. As part of our natural biodiversity, birds are necessary for natural pollination of plants. However, that also means weeds on our lawn and in our garden. As birds travel from garden-to-garden feeding, they are digesting thousands of various seeds, which they pass and ultimately end up on the ground. The seeds then sprout causing more weeds across our properties.

Reduce Your Weeds?
The number one thing that you could be doing to cut down on the volume of seeds that might germinate is to block or reduce the amount of sunlight that hits the soil surface. So many weed seeds need sunlight to germinate. So to prevent that from happening, you can add about 2 inches of mulch on your garden bed, or create a dense canopy of plants within you garden.
Either way the thick mulche at ground level will accomplish the same outcome of blocking the sunlight weed seeds need to sprout. Another step that you can take to manage your weeds is to reduce their growing environment. Avoid making it hospitable than it needs to be. If you need one more reason to save water, targeting your water sources is it. Direct your water right on the plants you're trying to grow, not on the weeds. You will be surprised just how easy it is to accomplish. By using soaker hoses, drip emitters, emitter tubing or just adjusting your inground irrigation system, you can deliver water only where it's intended, depriving weeds of water they so desire.
We already know it’s best to extract weeds before they go to seed, but the earlier in their life cycle the better, when they're still small and young. Removing weeds early makes the task so much easier before any root system has taken hold, plus they haven't really spread out and they're not competing for as much water and nutrient resources against the plans that we're trying to keep alive and cultivate.
Weed Control Without Chemicals.
When removing weeds without chemicals it's best to minimise soil disturbance, to reduce the risk of disturbing dormant seeds below ground. The absolute best way to remove seeds and small weeds is by hand. It can be very time consuming if the weeds have been left to grow, which ultimately will cost you more money in garden maintenance in the long run.
