Creating schmick hedges can be a mystery to a lot of people, but really, it's just regular maintenance and a few tricks. Pascoe Vale Lawn and Garden can get your hedges looking great short term and long term.
We prefer to trim and shape hedges in the warmer weather of spring, to take the pressure off your hedges and allow them to rejuvenate organically in spring. Before, trimming your hedges, pick a day when the weather forecast is comfortable, not one of those scorching hot days, that will just result in damage to your plant.
However, you can just take off any water shoots all year round that might pop up from time to time. It only takes a couple of minutes. The positives are it still looks good, but the negative is you will be doing it again in a couple weeks, but as far as how much to take off, it’s next to nothing, it's a little bit like trimming your beard.

Are Your Hedges Taking Over?
The next way to hedge is probably the way most people do it, once or twice a year just to control the size. Lilly Pilli’s grow well and can take over all your seating areas if you’re not attentive.
To keep it compact and prevent them from growing out of control, you need to reduce them every now and then. That means taking off all the new growth, trimming it back to the older darker growth. When you’re done, you will notice it doesn’t look good right away but, because you will be trimming in a growing season, the hedge will recover nice and quick.
If you're not confident (some people aren’t) and you think you’re going to butcher the hedge, you can always set up a tomato stake at each end and run a string line just higher than where you want the hedge height to be, so you don’t cut the stringline. However, make sure you do take a step back from time to time making sure you’re not cutting off course. If you are using a motorised hedge trimmer, you will need check the cut even more frequently.

If you are feeling a little more confident and want to tackle the hedge trimming quicker, or if the hedge is a large job, battery, electric or even petrol hedges are the way to go. Although there are pros and cons to both.
The commercial petrol hedge trimmers can make you fatigued rather quickly, because you're carrying and holding a lot of weight away from your body. Additionally, you will need to carry fuel which some people don’t like dealing with. The battery-operated ones, however, are fantastic, especially if you’re just trimming the lighter hedge edges. But like any battery-operated piece of equipment, you will need to ensure you have charged the battery and perhaps have a backup battery. Additionally, the more often you trim your hedges, the easier the job.
Once you have finished trimming, give it a rough rake which will help any rouge clippings be exposed and you can trim them off. Don’t forget to turn your attention to the bottom of the hedge and you can use shears tidy up where the machine couldn’t reach. Although the more
